Privacy Policy — Can I Read Now?
A reading tracker built around the Science of Reading. This page covers what the app does (and doesn't do) with your information.
The short version
Can I Read Now? does not collect any personal data. Everything you enter — profiles, reading activity, book scans, settings — is stored on your device only. There are no accounts, no logins, no analytics, no telemetry, and no servers receiving your data.
What stays on your device
- Reader profiles (nickname, optional emoji, grade band). We ask you to use a nickname — no real names or birthdates.
- Reading activity, sound and word histories, and the four-bucket assessment data.
- Scanned book entries, the recognized words, and any pronunciation overrides you set.
- App settings.
This data is held in the iPhone's standard secure on-device storage. It is removed when you delete the app or when you tap "Reset all data" in the About screen.
Camera and photo library
The app asks for camera and photo library permission only when you tap "Scan a book." Photos are used to read printed words from the page. Photos and the recognized text never leave your device. Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on the iPhone using Apple/ML Kit on-device APIs. The app does not upload images, does not store them in a cloud, and does not share them with any third party.
The Story prompt feature
Can I Read Now? can build a text prompt that asks an AI to create a short practice story targeting the sounds your reader is working on. The app itself does not send this prompt anywhere. It hands the text to the iOS Share Sheet so you can choose where to paste it (ChatGPT, Notes, Mail, a messaging app, etc.). Whatever you paste into is then governed by that app's privacy policy, not ours.
Children's privacy
Although the app is designed to help parents and teachers support young readers, it is intended for use by an adult. The app collects no personal information from anyone — child or adult — and does not transmit any data off the device. Use of nicknames (not real names) is encouraged in the on-screen copy and reflected in the app's design.
Third-party services
None. The app does not include analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, crash-reporting services, or remote-config services. The only "outside the app" interaction is the iOS Share Sheet, which is controlled by you.
Backup and restore
If you export your data using the in-app "Export all data" button, the app writes a JSON file and hands it to the iOS Share Sheet. You choose where it goes (Files, AirDrop, iCloud Drive, Mail, etc.). That file is then governed by wherever you saved it. Importing the same file restores your data on the same or a different device.
Feedback
If you tap "Send feedback" in the app, the iOS Mail app opens with our email address pre-filled. We include the app version and platform so we can debug — no names, no reading data. You choose whether and what to send.
Changes to this policy
If anything material changes, we'll update this page and bump the date below. Because the app stores nothing remotely, there is no central record of users to notify; the in-app About screen always links here.
