Michigan Science Center has previously offered Homeschool Learning Labs (per outside listings) covering topics like astronomy, biology, and geology. The dedicated /homeschool/ page on mi-sci.org currently 301-redirects to their homepage (likely a site restructure), so this link goes to the Families landing page. Call the Mi-Sci education team or email Education@Mi-Sci.org for current homeschool programming.
Their dedicated homeschool page has gone offline. Email Education@Mi-Sci.org for the current schedule before planning a trip.

🏷 Belle Isle Nature Center
📍 176 Lakeside Dr, Detroit, MI 48207
💰 Free
👶 All ages
Free family event exploring how simple actions support a healthier environment for people, animals, and nature. A good excuse to spend the day on Belle Isle — pair it with the aquarium, conservatory, and a walk along the water.
Belle Isle is always worth it. The nature center alone is a hidden gem that most Metro Detroit families sleep on.
Not a single event — a season worth building a field trip around. Farms and nature centers across Michigan open their sugarhouses in March and April. Kids can watch sap boiling, tap trees, and follow the full maple syrup process. Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival (Shepherd, MI) runs late April. Chippewa Nature Center in Midland is one of the best.
This makes a great science unit on plants, seasons, and food production. Bring containers — a lot of places let you buy fresh syrup on site.

💰 Free — open to local families (parishioners and non-parishioners)
👶 Toddlers through early elementary
On Wednesdays the Atrium opens to local families. The morning starts with parish Mass at 8:10 a.m., followed by an abbreviated guided Holy Hour built around prayer for the youngest. At 9:30 the Atrium itself opens — a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd space where toddlers do hands-on prayerful 'works' (pouring beans, polishing, simple practical tasks) with a catechist while parents observe and have communion in the gathering space outside.
You don't need to be a parishioner. Quiet, prayerful, and structured — very different vibe from a library story time.
💰 Free — open to parishioners and non-parishioners
👶 Toddlers and preschoolers (with a parent)
A volunteer reads a story, then leads a craft tied to the story's message. Built specifically as an out-of-the-house outlet for stay-at-home parents and their littles. Open to anyone in the area — you don't have to be Catholic or a parishioner.
Pairs well with the SCS library Wednesday storytime — different rhythm, different group of families.

Twice-monthly Thursday gatherings for Catholic homeschool families. Free play time across age groups, monthly faith-building talks for middle/high school kids by the pastor, liturgical-calendar feast day activities and crafts, field trips, and summer park days.
Furthest north of the Catholic options — but the pastor-led talks for older kids are a real draw.
Wide weekly lineup: Baby Lapsit (under 2), Toddler Time (high-energy singing/dancing/crafts at 10:30 & 11:30 — same content twice), Preschool Storytime (3–5, independent listeners), Sensory Friendly Storytime, and Saturday Stories. Programs are open to anyone — you don't need a Sterling Heights card to attend.
The 10:30 + 11:30 Toddler Time double-up is gold — if 10:30 is packed or your kid melts down, just slide into 11:30.
